For example, it was in Guatemala in the mid-1990\u2019s that Heart Care International learned to safely extubate heart surgery patients while they were in the operating room, a technique not then routinely practiced in the United States. This lesson was learned as a result of having too few ventilators to meet the needs of children requiring heart surgery.
